High Points of Ireland
Ireland High Points list
Below you will find a list of the highest point in each county of Ireland
The table is laid out alphabetically by county. If there’s a link on the mountain name that means I’ve hiked it and the link will bring you to the relevant blog post.
I’ve also assigned a completely subjective rating to the mountains based on my experience on the day.
Ultimately, almost all of these mountains are worthy of a visit, either in and of themselves, or because they are situated in beautiful areas. Trostan in Antrim, for example, is a pleasant walk with great views that can be accessed via a fantastic coastal drive from Larne. Further, Trostan is located in an area with a wealth of attractions like the Glens of Antrim and the Giant’s Causway.
Sligo’s Truskmore gets a star in spite of having to acces it by slogging up a steep access road, because the surrounding Gleniff Valley and nearby Benbulbin and Benwiskin are sights to behold.
No Star: A hill for the dedicated peak bagger
* :A good mountain in it’s category
** : An excellent mountain worth a detour
*** : An exceptional mountain worth a specific journey

I have started to do this too……..so delighted to have found your website as it will be so helpful over the year!
Hi Eva, hope the blog helps, you have lots of great walks to look forward to. If i can be of any help let me know. Murray
Hi Murray,
Myself and my mate completed all County peaks last weekend and by chance ended up finishing in Cork like yourself. We came across your web page early on in our journey and it was invaluable throughout. Just wanted to send you a message to say “Thanks” for all the information you posted. It has helped us achieve our own climbing goals and maybe even wetted the appetite to venture abroad! I’ve put together a youtube video of our climbs! Thanks again Darren
Hi Darren,
Thanks for your message, I’m really delighted to think that my posts might have been some help to your adventure.
Visiting the County Tops is a great project, isn’t it? I like your photos, they brought back lots of memories. It looks like you had a lot of similarly shite weather as me 🙂
Well done on completing the tops, have you logged your progress on MountainViews.ie?
Have you another project lined up? Good luck with it!
Murray
2012 is my year for climbing to all the county highs. I have 19 complete with 7 more to go. I started on New Year Day in Kerry & will finish in my home county Westmeath before Xmas. Last weekend I headed north stopping at Carnbane East in Meath on Friday, on to Carlingford & climb Slieve Foye Sat morning & Slieve Donard in the afternoon. Sunday was in Antrim for Trostan. Great fun… Mighy Mweelrea is next on the list.
Hi Margaret,
It sounds like you are making great progress, that sure was a busy weekend up north! Hope you get a nice clear day for Mweelrea.
Murray

Hi There. I am taking your county hills challenge and raising money for aware in the process in a series of personal challenges. Thanks for your guiding light on my walks so far. This site has been very useful. 9 climbs done so far. One Ben Wiskin I did by accident going down to Truskmore haha. Anyway thanks…Just did Seltanasaggart today. As an environmental Science student, I found it very interesting too.
Hi Cathal,
Glad to hear you are getting benefit from the site, it’s a few years old now but I guess mountains don’t change that quickly!
Good luck with your adventure.

Is there a guide book for this venture?
This book by Kieron Gribbon is your best bet if you are looking for a printed book covering the peaks.

Thanks for putting together a great and informative blog Murray, its still inspiring people up the hills. I am two down (Slieve Gullion and Slieve Foye) 24 to go, with Kippure in the plans for next weekend and working my way towards Carrauntoohill later in the summer.
Hey Aislinn, delighted to hear the blog is being of help. Enjoy the adventure!
Murray
I am enjoying it so far, Kippure done and dusted too.
Would love to do the highest peaks in Ireland. I have carontohil,Errigal, galtys done.
Good post. I learn something totally new and challenging
on sites I stumbleupon everyday. It’s always helpful to read articles from other writers and practice something from other sites.
Fisnished today, with Moylussa being my last one.
Errigal was my favourite I think.
Thanks for the guides.
This is brilliant – thanks so much for sharing! Can I ask if Tipperary and Limerick are referring to the same peak?
